Description
Oyster mushroom, also known as oyster or white oyster in some regions of Latin America, is a type of edible mushroom highly valued in gastronomy for its delicate flavor and soft texture. Its scientific name is Pleurotus ostreatus, and it is characterized by its shape, which resembles an oyster shell, with a white or grayish color and visible gills on the underside of the cap.
This mushroom is native to temperate regions of Asia, Europe, and North America, although today it is cultivated worldwide due to its culinary versatility and ease of cultivation.
In cooking, the oyster mushroom is valued for its subtle umami flavor, which adds depth to soups, stews, stir-fries, and vegetarian dishes. Additionally, it is low in calories and fat, rich in protein, dietary fiber, B vitamins, and minerals such as potassium, iron, and phosphorus. It also contains antioxidants and bioactive compounds that may help strengthen the immune system.
In different Latin American countries, besides being called "seta ostra," it may go by other names such as hongo ostra, ostra, or simply ostra blanca, depending on the region.
Thanks to its firm yet tender texture and mild flavor, the oyster mushroom is an ideal ingredient for adding a gourmet and healthy touch to your recipes.
