Description

Pandan leaves are the long, narrow, and aromatic leaves of the Pandanus amaryllifolius plant, widely used in Southeast Asian cuisine, especially in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. These leaves provide a sweet and characteristic aroma, similar to vanilla or jasmine, which enhances the flavor of both sweet and savory dishes.

The origin of pandan leaves is found in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where the plant grows naturally in warm and humid climates. Traditionally, the leaves are used fresh to wrap food, infuse rice or milk, and as a flavoring in desserts, rice dishes, and curries.

Regarding their properties, in addition to their natural aroma, pandan leaves are known to contain antioxidants and compounds that may aid digestion. Although their primary use is culinary, they are also used in traditional medicine to relieve pain and control stress.

In different Latin American countries, pandan leaves go by various names; although it is not a common ingredient in traditional Latin American cuisine, they can be found as “hojas de pandanus” or simply “pandan”. In specialized stores or Asian product markets, they may also be called aromatic leaves.
