Description
Sesame and nori furikake is a dry Japanese condiment, very popular for adding flavor and texture to various dishes. It is mainly composed of toasted sesame seeds and nori (dehydrated and crushed seaweed), to which other ingredients such as salt, sugar, and sometimes small pieces of dried fish or egg are often added.
This condiment originated in Japan, where it is traditionally used to sprinkle over white rice, but its use has spread to other preparations such as salads, soups, and noodle dishes, providing an umami touch, a slight sea flavor, and a pleasant crunch.
Regarding its properties, sesame and nori furikake is a source of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron from sesame and seaweed, in addition to providing fiber and antioxidants. Its caloric content is moderate and, due to the presence of sesame, it contains healthy fats for the body.
In several Latin American countries, although there is no exact equivalent name for this condiment, it can be referred to as a mixture of sesame seeds and seaweed or simply sesame and nori seasoning. In some places, it may also be called Japanese topping or Japanese rice spice.
