Description
Pearled barley is a cereal that comes from barley, a herbaceous plant cultivated since antiquity, especially in temperate regions of Europe and Asia. Pearled barley gets its name because it has been processed to remove the outer husk and part of the bran, leaving a smoother, whitish grain that cooks faster than whole barley.
In cooking, pearled barley is highly valued for its slightly chewy texture and pleasant nutty flavor, making it ideal for soups, stews, salads, and as a base for vegetarian or healthy dishes. Furthermore, it absorbs the flavors of other ingredients well, adding body and nutrition.
Regarding its properties, pearled barley is an excellent source of dietary fiber, especially beta-glucans, which help improve digestion and reduce blood cholesterol levels. It also contains B vitamins, minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and selenium, and provides complex carbohydrates that offer sustained energy.
In different regions of Latin America, pearled barley may have alternative names such as hulled barley, although the term "pearled barley" is generally the most common and recognized in recipes and culinary ingredients.
