Description
Sunflower seeds are the small edible seeds obtained from helianthus annuus, a plant commonly known as sunflower. These seeds have a delicate, slightly sweet and nutty flavor, and are widely used in various cooking recipes, from salads to breads and desserts.
Originating in North America, sunflower seeds were originally cultivated by indigenous peoples before spreading to other regions of the world. Today, their cultivation is common in many countries due to their versatility and nutritional benefits.
Regarding their properties, sunflower seeds are an excellent source of healthy fats, especially unsaturated fatty acids, as well as plant proteins and fiber. In addition, they are rich in B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc, making them an ideal food to provide energy and improve cardiovascular health and immune function.
In different Hispanic American countries, sunflower seeds are also known as pepitas de girasol or simply pepitas (although the latter term can refer to other seeds depending on the region). However, the most common and recognized name in culinary recipes is semillas de girasol (sunflower seeds).
