Description

Kelp powder is a fine powder obtained from the dehydration and grinding of seaweeds of the Laminaria genus, commonly known as kelp. These seaweeds grow primarily in the cold and temperate waters of the northern hemisphere, especially along the coasts of the North Atlantic and North Pacific.

This ingredient is highly valued in cooking for its natural umami flavor and its ability to enhance dishes, providing a salty and oceanic touch. It is commonly used in soups, broths, sauces, and dressings, especially in Asian cuisine recipes, although its use has spread globally thanks to its nutritional profile.

Kelp powder is rich in iodine, an essential mineral for the proper functioning of the thyroid, and also contains vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium. It also provides fiber and antioxidants, contributing to a healthy diet.

In different Latin American countries, kelp powder may be known simply as kelp seaweed powder or, in some cases, it is called seaweed powder or sargassum powder, although technically the latter refers to other seaweeds. It is important to note that kelp always refers to these large brown seaweeds used in cooking and nutrition.
